PRESS RELEASE ACROSS CANADA

CANADIAN-LIBYANS CALL FOR ACTION TO END WAR CRIMES

OTTAWA, Feb. 24 /CNW/ - Communities across Canada are uniting on Saturday February 26th to voice their outrage at the violence being inflicted upon unarmed Libyan civilians by Col. Muammar Al-Gaddafi's regime. As of February 21st the International Coalition Against War Criminals has reported 519 deaths, 3,980 wounded and at least 1,500 missing in Libya since the start of demonstrations a week ago. Figures are likely higher, with some reports of the death toll reaching 1,000.
Col. Gaddafi is defiant, and insisted that he would "cleanse Libya house by house". As the Libyan Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations Ibrahim Dabbashi declared, "We are sure that what is going on now in Libya is a crime against humanity…it is impossible to stay silent."
Canadian-Libyans are united in demanding that the Harper government act now to end the violence. Canadian-Libyans ask all nations to stand with the Libyan people by:
  1. Calling on the United Nations Security Council to take decisive action and invoke Chapter 7 to stop the massacre of civilians, and deployment of international peace-keeping troops.
  2. Establishing a no-fly zone to prevent Gaddafi from using the air-force.
  3. Facilitating the delivery of medical supplies and humanitarian aid;
  4. Indicting Gaddafi for crimes against humanity and trying him in the International Criminal Court.
  5. The immediate deployment of U.N. troops to confirm reports of crimes against humanity.
  6. Freezing any assets belonging to the Gadaffi family and senior officials;

Fundraiser and Rally, Saturday @ 1:00 PM

Untold hundreds of Libyans have been killed and many thousands have been injured since the beginning of the Libyan uprising last week. Hospitals all over Libya are experiencing severe shortages of medical supplies and manpower. The people of Libya right now need all the help they can get in order to care for the wounded.

The Libyan community in Vancouver is organizing a fundraiser and rally at 1:00 PM on Saturday, February 26th at the steps of the Vancouver Public Library. This event has 2 aims. The first is to raise awareness about what is happening in Libya, in order to put pressure on governments and aid groups to condemn the use of violence against civilians and to send aid to Libya as fast as possible. The second aim is to raise funds to purchase medical supplies and send doctors into parts of Libya where they are needed immediately.
